This song, from Yusuf/Cat Steven’s 1970 breakthrough album “Tea for the Tillerman”, is a conversation between a father and a son. The father (whose lines are vocalized in the lower register), counsels his son to stay home and settle down, but the son (whose lines are sung in the higher register), feels compelled to leave and seek his own destiny. Although the story is fictional, Stevens says that his relationship with his own father, who owned a restaurant in London, England and hoped that his son would stay in the family business, did have an influence. But Stevens notes that he and his father loved each other and he let him go to become a pop star. This song is about those who can’t break loose. A cover of “Father and Son”.
