Michael Howitt

Neil Young wrote this love song to Mortimer Hearseburg, aka “Mort”, a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse he bought from a Winnipeg mortuary when he was 18. Mort proved to be the ideal vehicle for him and his band, the Squires, as there was room for the band and all their equipment and it was an attention-getter when they pulled in to their gigs. Mort’s transmission blew while travelling on the highway between Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie in 1965 (not 1962 as in the lyrics of the song) near a town named Blind River. Mort was toast but Neil never forgot his trusted vehicle, releasing this song on a 1976 collaborative album of the same name with his Buffalo Springfield band Stephen Stills. A cover of “Long May You Run”.
