Last week, on November 26, 2021, the world lost Stephen Sondheim, the songwriter who reshaped American musical theatre in the second half of the 20th century with his intelligent, intricately rhymed lyrics, his use of evocative melodies and his willingness to tackle unusual subjects. He was 91. This song was written for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. The character, Desiree, reflects on the ironies and disappointments in her life. Sondheim uses clowns who, whenever a disaster occurred, were sent in to distract the crowd. This song was famously covered by Judy Collins who took the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1976, as well as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Kenny Rogers, and Lou Rawls. Here is “Send In The Clowns”.
