“Ride On” was written by Jimmy McCarthy, an inspired 10 minutes when he wrote two verses and a chorus (in the late 1970s?) while awaiting a lift on Cork’s Barrack Street, in Ireland. In explaining the song, MacCarthy said that the deeper element people miss lies in the fact ‘Ride On’ tells a tale of two people going separate paths because one doesn’t believe in bloodshed (many of McCarthy’s songs are political), and being lovers adds an extra layer of loss. The song was made famous by Christy Moore, who recorded many of McCarthy’s songs and its fame inspired many artists to cover the song. As well. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield performed “Ride On” with NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman accompanying him on flute at the United Space School’s traditional Mexican Night in 2012, as a tribute to late space pioneer Sally Ride.
