First recorded by Harry McClintock in 1928 but inspired by other hobo songs. “An Invitation to Lubberland”, “The Appleknocker’s Lament”, “Hobo’s Paradise”, “Hobo Heaven”, “Sweet Potato Mountains” and “Little Streams of Whiskey” mention similar concepts. Burl Ives recorded a children’s version which removed the references to cigarettes and alcohol, as does this version. A great song for practicing breath control.
