“Riptide” by Vance Joy. The song references a girl he met (“I’m a magician’s assistant”), a hotel he vacationed at as a kid (Riptide), and Michelle Pfeiffer, smitten by her as a kid after she played Catwoman in “Batman Returns”. The song evolved in small pieces from 2008 to 2012; after the melody for the chorus emerged, so did the rest of the song. It was a major hit and landed him a 5 record deal.
