Clapton wrote this song, with Dominos drummer Jim Gordon, about his forbidden love for the wife of his close friend George Harrison (she eventually became Claptonโs wife). Since Harrison was one of his closest friends, Clapton asked him for permission to ask her out, and despite the “bro code”, permission was granted, and Clapton and Harrision remained close friends right to to the end. The song was inspired by Claptonโs reading of the classic Persian unrequited love story, the epic poem Layla and Manjun. This is “Layla”.
